Not Enough GOOD Homes For Pit Bull Dogs
SPAY & NEUTER
SNKC CAN HELP! |
Considering the current situation, MPR does NOT support show breeding, backyard breeding, "game breeding", or ANY form of Pit Bull breeding. Pit Bulls are overflowing and being destroyed in area shelters - There is NO excuse to add more to an already over-saturated market.

| FOSTER HOMES NEEDED Sept 2008 |
|
|
|
ASAP PLEA!!!!
MPR needs YOUR help in providing a FOSTER HOME for these two cherished pets. Sadly, their owner recently passed away and the dogs have nowhere to go. The dogs have been cherished pets for six years and will NOT do well in boarding. They are currently kept in a "temporary" foster home, at risk of being confiscated by Animal control any time now, because their foster home is over pet limit. PLEASE HELP!!! Ideally, we'd like to see them placed into a home together.
Can YOU open your heart and home to help please ... |
DESPERATELY NEEDED!!!
MORE FOSTER HOMES.....
The dogs below are in boarding and in desperate need of foster care. Not only is boarding very expensive, but living in a cage is hard for any dog as sociable as a Pit Bull. Can you imagine for just a moment just how difficult it is being in a cage day in and day out when you once were a loving family pet? PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts you see below. They desperately need YOU!
Each dog in boarding costs about $220.00
a month
Our Boarding Dogs |

As it is, we can't help anymore dogs until our boarding dogs are in foster care. MPR doesn't believe in long term boarding for the dogs in the program. We need to find foster homes for the boarding dogs before we can save more lives.....

Give a Brindle Bully a Chance! |
In 2007 when I finally decided to adopt my foster dog Sugar Pie, it was because she had been with me for almost 2 years. I couldn't imagine letting her go at that point because we had spent so much time together. Although I was happy to make Sugar Pie an official member of the family, it was still so hard for me to understand why she had been in the program for almost 2 1/2 years with only a handful of people interested in her. She has a great personality, she's beautiful, obedient, great with kids and overall an incredibly laid back pitbull. So why did she get the least amount of hits on our web site and why did no one seem to want to give this amazing dog a chance?
It was then that I began to realize that Sug, like so many dogs in our program, was being consistently overlooked because of her brindle coat. For some reason, prospective adopters tend not to opt for brindle dogs when looking for a new bully. Solid colored rescue dogs such as blue, white and gold are 50-75% more likely to get adopted before a dog with a brindle coat. |
|
|
MPR respects that whichever dog you choose to adopt is totally up to you and greatly appreciated by us. However, this month we would like to ask that those of you out there interested in adding a new member to your family to consider giving a brindle bully a chance.
We currently have some brindles available for adoption, some of which, like Sherman, have been waiting for their forever home for 3 years! That's much too long for such an amazing dog like him! Most of our brindle beauties are in established foster homes and have been waiting for quite some time. Although we wish that they would all find their forever homes as soon as possible, the added stay in a home environment has allowed time to train for basic obedience skills, housetraining and crate training. Even the new dogs in temporary boarding are getting a good start on acquiring those skills. |
MPR hopes that if you are looking to add a pitbull to your life this month you will consider one of our "Brindle Beauties." They have been waiting so long ... won't you open your heart and give them a chance?
Adopting Sugar Pie was one of the happiest days of my life, could adopting a brindle be one of the happiest days in yours?

MPR holds Adoption Events on a regular basis to allow the public to meet our dogs, talk to our volunteers about Pit Bull ownership, ask question and spend individual time with a dog they might be interested to adopt.
Please email us if you want to know which dog will be attending this event.
Some events may be cancelled in case of rain or extreme heat.

National Adopt a Black Dog Month - Many black dogs languish in shelters or remain with rescue organizations long after other dogs get adopted. Despite this, black dogs make terrific companions. They're gorgeous, wonderful animals. Open your heart and home and adopt a black dog this month.
National Dog Week (Sept. 21-27, 2008) - . National Dog Week was founded in 1928 by Captain Will Judy, a noted dog judge and former publisher of Dog World Magazine. The purpose of this celebration is to bring attention to man's best friend; not only to honor the pets in 25 million American households, but also to educate all dog owners in their responsibilities to their pets and to their communities. During National Dog Week take some time to give your own dog a little extra love !! |

| Pit bull program a doggone success - Second Chance Pet Rescue offers free obedience and AKC Canine Good Citizen testing to any Pit bull and guardian team. Adopting a Pit bull from the Corning Animal Shelter is not quite as easy as just signing on the dotted line. Application pre-screening and a home visit are performed. An adoption is not final until the dog and new guardian pass the American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen test. |
| How to let kids pet your dog - As we all know there can be some danger in having a child approach a strange dog and pet it. The Victor Valley Daily Press has a good story on ways to teach kids to pet appropriately as well as warning signs to be wary of. |

Springfield, MO - Councilman Opposes Pit Bull Law - Springfield's pit bull law faces new opposition from within city government.
Councilman Doug Burlison says he's been against the pit bull ordinance since before he ran for city council last year.
He says the law is wrong because it singles out one specific breed, pit bulls.
Pit bull owner Betty Browning says her five pound Chihuahua is the dog with the bite, not her pit bulls.
She says people have a misconception about the dogs.
Burlison says he is working on getting more council members on his side before bringing forward a formal proposal to repeal the ordinance. |
Buckner, MO - Couple asks Buckner to alter dog ordinance - Buckner is facing opposition to its ban of pit bulls and vicious dogs. The board adopted the ordinance in 2000. A couple who owns two pit bulls on Thursday asked aldermen to change the ordinance so they can buy a home in town.
The Board will be voting on this issue on September 4, 2008.
If you would like to send a letter to encourage the Buckner Mayor and Board of Aldermen to rescind their pit bull ordinance, correspondence can be sent to the city, via the city clerk, at:
City Clerk/Administrator,
Yvonna Stapleton,
(816) 650-3191, yvonnastapleton.buckner@comcast.net . In addition, a complete list of city officials can be found at the Buckner website: http://www.discoverynet.com/~ajsnead/mycomm/city/citygovn.html |
Missouri - HB 1777 Neglect is Abuse, Too - HB 1777 will make it easier to prosecute animal abusers. Current law demands that "substantial harm" must be done to an animal before a perpetrator can be found guilty of animal neglect. This requirement makes it very difficult to prosecute starvation cases. However, HB 1777 provides that a custodian and/or owner of an animal is guilty of animal neglect if he or she negligently fails to provide adequate care or adequate control. | Missouri - SB 819 Increases Penalties for Dog Fighting - Update, 3/06/08 - This bill was passed out of the Senate Judiciary committee on Monday, March 3, 2008. It has not yet been placed on the Senate calendar for a vote. SB 819 would give the Show Me State stiffer laws against dog fighting. The bill, sponsored by Senator Scott Rupp, would add dog fighting to the list of offenses that are subject to the Criminal Activity Forfeiture Act. It would increase the penalty for being a spectator at a dog fighting event, and allow law enforcement officers making a lawful seizure to take possession of dogs and property used in the violation. This bill is pending in the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. Click HERE for more information. |
| Missouri - SB 886 Regulates the Dog, Not the Breed - Anti-BSL bill heard in Senate (Missouri). Sen. Jolie Justus, a Kansas City Democrat, presented a bill in committee that would prohibit cities from adopting breed-specific dangerous-dog ordinances. If approved, Justus' bill would void all previous ordinances and prohibit any new ones from discriminating by breed. Click HERE for more information. |

Lovable Longshot |
Longshot owes his life to the quick action of a nice couple in Kansas City who witnessed him being a victim of a terrible act of cruelty.
Longshot, who is obviously a lover, not a fighter, had just lost his first dog fight and was about to be killed by his tormentor since he wasn't any good to him anymore.
The couple who happened to drive by as this ordeal was taking place, stepped in to save Longshot's life and this happy boy is now safe in our program.
Longshot is so happy, even in a boarding situation that can easily break many dogs spirits he seems to keep his high. Anytime a volunteer comes near his run he starts wiggling his butt and gives this sweet look as if he is saying "Is it my turn for love?" He really does get so happy over the smallest things. He would definitely give his all to anyone to show him love, it is clear that he is a lover not a fighter.
What is there NOT to love about this sweet easy going boy? Are you that special person that will open your heart and home to give your all to Longshot and receive unconditional love and devotion in return? |

| FEATURED VOLUNTEER September 2008 |
|
|
This month MPR would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of our wonderful volunteer, Carrie.
Carrie's experience with MPR began when she adopted Serenity in September 2007 and by December had stepped up to become a volunteer for MPR and we're so glad she did.
Carrie's endless energy and enthusiasm has been a great benefit to MPR and the dogs we serve. Her current activities include assisting with screening and providing homechecks for potential adoptions on the East side of Missouri. She is currently fostering her 9th MPR dog, Dublin, and has adopted a previous foster, Justice. In addition to all this she has also written several blogs for MPR.
Carrie, a mother of 4 writes, "I am determined to educate my children on the importance of fairness and ethical treatment of this misrepresented breed and most of all to celebrate the opportunity to own and defend the honor of the American Pit Bull Terrier! We chuckle when someone looks cross-eyed at our beautiful dogs at the other end of the leash!"
|
Carrie's caring, hard work and commitment are such an asset to MPR and we are so very fortunate and thankful to have her on board.

Pampered Panda (Now Danni)
I have attached several pictures of Panda. She is a character!!!!! From day one Panda has ruled the roost with every pet and person in the household. She plays nonstop with our other male pit and takes full advantage of the acreage. They are best buds.
Nothing makes Panda happier than chasing june bugs and frogs. She likes to visit my sister's and play with the kids and their dog and will soon be in a daycare program 1-2 days a week. Hopefully this will help with her "high energy" level in the evenings. :)
Our quiet household has been turned upside down by this little pup. My older female dog has lost a few .lbs from all of the walks we now take and that is a good thing as she hasn't had a waist in a long time. One of the photos is the two pits and our female waiting for a bite of scrambled egg (breakfast in bed) on a Saturday morning. They are all lined up waiting expectantly.
Needless to say, Panda (Danni) has become a full-fledged member of our family!
