| FOSTER HOMES NEEDED June 2008 |
|
|
|
URGENT PLEA!!!!
MPR needs YOUR help in providing a FOSTER HOME for these two cherished pets. Sadly, their owner recently passed away and the surviving owner is not well enough right now to take care of them. The dogs have been cherished pets for six years and will NOT do well in boarding. MPR does not have any available foster homes for them to go to. Ideally, we'd like to see them placed into a foster home together.
Can YOU open your heart and home to help please ... |
DESPERATELY NEEDED!!!
MORE FOSTER HOMES.....
The dogs below are in boarding and in desperate need of foster care. Not only is boarding very expensive, but living in a cage is hard for any dog as sociable as a Pit Bull. Can you imagine for just a moment just how difficult it is being in a cage day in and day out when you once were a loving family pet? PLEASE open your heart and home for one of the sweethearts you see below. They desperately need YOU!
$$$ Each dog in boarding costs about $220.00 a month
As it is, we can't help anymore dogs until our boarding dogs are in foster care. MPR doesn't believe in long term boarding for the dogs in the program. We need to find foster homes for the boarding dogs before we can save more lives.....
Please help us help them.... |
|
| WE URGENTLY NEED YOU!!!! We've been approached to help these dogs below and it absolutely breaks our hearts into a million pieces to have to say we have no room because we are so full and in such desperate need of foster homes and funds. Please, please, please ... won't YOU help us by opening your heart and home to become a foster parent or if you can't do that at this time, please consider providing financial support so we can help all these dogs that so very desperately need us and YOU to help them! |

Trixie (aka Pita)
Trixie is house-trained and crate-trained. She is beautiful and has a very sweet disposition. She gets along well with other dogs, ignores cats, and walks well on a leash. Trixie is about 10 to 14 months old. Trixie is Heartworm positive.... |

Ziggy
Confiscated due to cruelty and neglect, this poor dog is in DIRE need of help. Ziggy was emaciated when rescued, had wounds and skin infections. In addition, he is Heartworm positive and hoping for a donation to save his life. Ziggy needs a foster home as soon as possible.
|
MPR holds Adoption Events on a regular basis to allow the public to meet our dogs, talk to our volunteers about Pit Bull ownership, ask question and spend individual time with a dog they might be interested to adopt.
Please email us if you want to know which dog will be attending this event.
Some events may be cancelled in case of rain.

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?
New tricks and obedience are exactly what MPR dogs are learning these days through positive reinforcement techniques. Adult and puppy alike, our dogs (and foster parents) are receiving a little hands on training from a professional! |
MPR is very excited and grateful for a local Kansas City area trainer who has offered free training sessions for MPR dogs. Xander, Blue Ice, Anya, and Butterball were our first lucky dogs to partake in training sessions. Sit, stay, down, "Say hi", and come were a few of the commands the group focused on.
Believe it or not, dog training isn't only about training the dog - it is training the handler as well. The instructor took a lot of time explaining how to interact with the dogs and use positive reinforcement including treats to get the dogs to master the commands. All of our dogs that attended the course left with new tricks and full bellies! We can't say enough about how well these dogs did. They were so eager to please.
Please watch our home page for further training updates.

Pit bull rescued from famous dogfighting ring now helps cancer patients
|
NBC News and MSNBC Tues., June. 17, 2008
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - It’s a dog’s life. And for Leo it couldn’t be better.
Leo — rescued from heavy chains that confined him as one of the pit bulls in former NFL quarterback Michael Vick’s dogfighting ring — is a lover, not a fighter. He now happily frolics in a clown collar as he makes the rounds at the Camino Infusion Center, where he brings comfort to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Full Story

| Pit bull saves owner from attack by two dogs - Pit bull dogs get plenty of bad publicity, but Geraldine Pedersen of Alexandria says her pit bull, Lazer, deserves to be called a hero. She said Lazer defended her from an attack by two dogs. A big dog and a smaller dog, both of which appeared to be blue heelers, were "running towards me," the 66-year-old woman said. "Not my dog -- me." |

| June 16, 2008 - Osceola, Nebraska - Pit-bull ban wins unanimous approval - The Osceola City Council unanimously passed its proposed ban on the American Pit Bull and seven other dog breeds designated as vicious dogs at its regular meeting last week. ...“The passage of the new ordinance was unanimous,” Lindsley said. “The truth is, the ordinance is what it is. I’m a dog owner and I personally feel really bad about the fact that this occurred when there was only one dog in town that is on the list of vicious dogs. Had this been a situation where there were none or 20 of these animals in town it would have been a whole different situation.

| AURORA, CO - Suit to scrap pit bull ban heads to court - Challenges to the city's current ban on pit bulls will proceed to federal court in August after a state judge deemed viable questions of the law's impact on public safety. |
| **ALERT** Pottawatomie County, Kansas (Pits, rotties, dobies) - Pott Co. to strengthen dog laws - Pottawatomie County Commissioners last Thursday indicated a desire to put some legal teeth into preventing attacks by vicious dogs.
Commissioners asked county counselor Gary Conklin to obtain sample ordinances from other municipalities that prohibit harboring breeds with a history or propensity for viciousness --- specifically pit bulls, Dobermans and Rottweilers. Click the Pottawatomie County Administration and Pottawatomie County Commissioners to access contact information. Please send your polite and respectful opposition to breed specific legislation to the Pottawatomie County officials. Please also send viable alternatives and non-breed specific ordinances for their review. |
| Missouri - HB 1777 Neglect is Abuse, Too - HB 1777 will make it easier to prosecute animal abusers. Current law demands that "substantial harm" must be done to an animal before a perpetrator can be found guilty of animal neglect. This requirement makes it very difficult to prosecute starvation cases. However, HB 1777 provides that a custodian and/or owner of an animal is guilty of animal neglect if he or she negligently fails to provide adequate care or adequate control. | Missouri - SB 819 Increases Penalties for Dog Fighting - Update, 3/06/08 - This bill was passed out of the Senate Judiciary committee on Monday, March 3, 2008. It has not yet been placed on the Senate calendar for a vote. SB 819 would give the Show Me State stiffer laws against dog fighting. The bill, sponsored by Senator Scott Rupp, would add dog fighting to the list of offenses that are subject to the Criminal Activity Forfeiture Act. It would increase the penalty for being a spectator at a dog fighting event, and allow law enforcement officers making a lawful seizure to take possession of dogs and property used in the violation. This bill is pending in the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. Click HERE for more information. |
| Missouri - SB 886 Regulates the Dog, Not the Breed - Anti-BSL bill heard in Senate (Missouri). Sen. Jolie Justus, a Kansas City Democrat, presented a bill in committee that would prohibit cities from adopting breed-specific dangerous-dog ordinances. If approved, Justus' bill would void all previous ordinances and prohibit any new ones from discriminating by breed. Click HERE for more information. |

Adorable Anya |
What a babe! This black beauty is not only gorgeous on the outside, she also has a true beauty inside. She is about 2 years old and look at that body...! She definitely is a head-turner.
Anya is a friendly girl, outgoing and playful. She craves and "demands" attention, so not the best choice if you are looking for an independent pet.
She does well in the house, has great manners and is easy to handle. We're working on her sit, down and wait commands. She seems to learn quickly and wants to learn/is responsive.
She has a very funny trait of sticking her butt in the air and her head on the floor as a form of greeting - she can be and looks very sweet/cute! She has beautiful brown eyes and very cute radar/bat ears when she is focused! She likes people and loves to be petted, prefers to sleep in your lap. She takes treats very gently and chews them carefully if given in small bites. (She will inhale a milk bone whole if given the chance!) Please open your heart and home to this black beauty ... you'll have a friend for life! | |

Congratulations Serenity for passing the CGC test in May WITH FLYING COLORS!!!
Started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs.
MPR congratulates Serenity and her family for achieving this award and for being great breed ambassadors. |
| A note from her mom: I am just so proud to announce that after a 6 week training preparation class, Serenity has passed the Canine Good Citizenship (CGC) test awarded by the American Kennel Club! Together, she and I attended weekly classes for her to gain social & basic obedience skills. The training didn't only teach my Pit Bull, but also gave me skills to apply to the rest of my pack and to any Foster Pitties that may come into my home.
I would absolutely advise the owner of any breed dog to enroll in a local training class and find a CGC testing site near you. To be given a chance to develop an even stronger bond with my dog during these classes, is time I would not trade for anything! |
|
Serenity came from death row, to be given another chance at a better life thanks to Missouri Pit Bull Rescue (MPR). In September 07' we adopted her and she has become a very important member of our family!
Thank you to MPR!!! |
