Not Enough GOOD Homes For Pit Bulls

Considering the current situation, MPR does NOT support show breeding, backyard breeding, "game breeding", or ANY form of Pit Bull breeding. Pit Bulls are overflowing and being destroyed in area shelters - There is NO excuse to add more to an already over-saturated market.

  NEW DOGS   April 2008

This month we were very full as always but two poor souls came knocking at the door and it was simply impossible to turn them down. While both doth dogs were victims of terrible hardships, they were also incredibly lucky to have found help and be brought to safety in time.

Gonzo

Gonzo

This adorable litle blue boy was left to die on the side of the road and spent several days lying on a ditch.

Some passerby's brought him food and water but everyone was too scared to pick him up. Thankfully, soomeone finaly realized that this poor dog was shelshock from his terrible ordeal but just about as sweet and friendly as can be.

Gonzo was brought to an emergency vet clinic where he was diagnosed with a tibia fracture. Gonzo is now in a splint and recuperating in a loving home. He couldnt be anymore grateful.

Coming Soon

Nelson

Nelson is another example of the horror of dog fighting in Kansas City. We can only imagine what this poor little guy has gone through in his short life... Yet, he is one of the sweetest dogs in our program. Brought to a spay and neuter clinic where some of our members volunteer, no words could express the shock and dismay we all felt when we saw him.

We are currently assessing the extent of Nelson's injuries and raising money for his care. If you would like to help us turn Nelson's life around and transform him into a real little prince charming, please donate generously.

  FOSTER HOMES NEEDED April 2008

Everyday we get pleas to help Pit Bulls in need and we must explain that we are too full. There are cases however, where this very real excuse just doesn't work. Below are dogs that were abandoned outside, or sitting hopeless on deathrow. MPR decided to bite the bullet despite our lack of availability in the program, and welcome them in. The dogs are now in boarding for $210.00 a month EACH.

Do the math! Imagine the amount of Pit Bulls we would be able to help, get spayed and neutered, rehabilitate, etc, if we didn't have to spend so much money in boarding. Yet, how could we say no?

 BLOG April 2008

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

New tricks and obedience are exactly what MPR dogs are learning these days through positive reinforcement techniques. Adult and puppy alike, our dogs (and foster parents) are receiving a little hands on training from a professional!

MPR is very excited and grateful for a local Kansas City area trainer who has offered free training sessions for our dogs. Xander, Blue Ice, Anya, and Butterball were our first lucky dogs to partake in training sessions. Sit, stay, down, "Say hi", and come were a few of the commands the group focused on.

Believe it or not, dog training isn't only about training the dog - it is training the handler as well. The instructor took a lot of time explaining how to interact with the dogs and use positive reinforcement including treats to get the dogs to master the commands. All of our dogs that attended the course left with new tricks and full bellies! We can't say enough about how well these dogs did. They were so eager to please.

Please watch our home page for further training updates.

  NEWS April 2008

April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. - If you spotted an act of cruelty against an animal, would you know what to do? That's a tough question for many people: Should you confront the alleged abuser? Wait until you can call the police? If you do, do you risk reprisal? Or perhaps you're not entirely sure if the treatment constitutes abuse.

To help educate the public, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has made April "Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month." People are urged to spend time this month to educate themselves and others about existing animal cruelty laws and to support pending legislation. For more information, click HERE.

April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month. Would you know what to do if your dog injured his leg or got stung by a bee? What kinds of first aid can you administer and when do you need a doctor? What to pack in a pet first aid kit. Are there pet first aid courses available in your area? Do you know how to administer animal CPR? Pet owners are reminded that, as a member of the family, it is important to know what to do if your pet is ever injured or has a medical emergency.

BSL NEWS
March 31, 2008 - OMAHA, Neb - Dangerous dog bill moves forward - The state of Nebraska is steps away from putting new restrictions on pet owners with animals deemed to be a threat to others. The legislation defines what makes a dangerous dog and gives government authority to euthanize animals that attack more than once. LB 1055 will make penalties more severe for owners of dangerous animals.
Missouri - HB 1777 Neglect is Abuse, Too - HB 1777 will make it easier to prosecute animal abusers. Current law demands that "substantial harm" must be done to an animal before a perpetrator can be found guilty of animal neglect. This requirement makes it very difficult to prosecute starvation cases. However, HB 1777 provides that a custodian and/or owner of an animal is guilty of animal neglect if he or she negligently fails to provide adequate care or adequate control. Click HERE for more information.
Missouri - SB 819 Increases Penalties for Dog Fighting - Update, 3/06/08 - This bill was passed out of the Senate Judiciary committee on Monday, March 3, 2008. It has not yet been placed on the Senate calendar for a vote. SB 819 would give the Show Me State stiffer laws against dog fighting. The bill, sponsored by Senator Scott Rupp, would add dog fighting to the list of offenses that are subject to the Criminal Activity Forfeiture Act. It would increase the penalty for being a spectator at a dog fighting event, and allow law enforcement officers making a lawful seizure to take possession of dogs and property used in the violation. This bill is pending in the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. Click HERE for more information.
Missouri - SB 886 Regulates the Dog, Not the Breed - Anti-BSL bill heard in Senate (Missouri). Sen. Jolie Justus, a Kansas City Democrat, presented a bill in committee that would prohibit cities from adopting breed-specific dangerous-dog ordinances. If approved, Justus' bill would void all previous ordinances and prohibit any new ones from discriminating by breed. Click HERE for more information.

Missouri: SB 886 Regulates the Dog, Not the Breed

SB 886 - Dangerous Dogs
Sponsor(s):
Senator Jolie Justus
ASPCA Position:
Support

Action Needed: Please email our letter to your state senator and members of the Missouri State Senate Economic Development, Tourism and Local Government Committee to express your support for this bill.

Sponsored by Senator Jolie Justus, SB 886 would allow any Missouri village, town or city to adopt regulations to control vicious or dangerous dogs-but importantly, the bill prevents communities from discriminating against any breed of dog.

Dogs are individuals: any dog can bite. Citizens should be protected from vicious and dangerous dogs of all breeds or mixes. Discriminating against certain breeds of dogs fails to protect the public and penalizes responsible dog owners.

Your letter will be sent to:

  • Your State Senator or Senators
  • Senator John E. Griesheimer
  • Senator Jack Goodman
  • Senator Harry Kennedy
  • Senator Ryan Glennon McKenna
  • Senator Carl M. Vogel
  • Senator Wes Shoemyer
  • Senator Jason G. Crowell
  • Senator Michael R. Gibbons
  • Senator Kevin Engler

  CENTERFOLD April 2008
 Joyous Josephine

Pulled from Deathrow on her last day, this very lucky little girl is a petite thing but stocky and big boned. Why Josie has not been adopted yet is completely beyond us. She is one of the best dogs we have in the program and definitely one of the cutest. Josie is so very sweet and loves people.

Josie is fairly outgoing and always happy to meet everyone. She's very goofy and loves to chase her tail, play fetch and bat her ball around the yard. She has spurts of energy, especially when she's been crated for a while, but as long as she has enough exercise (which can be a good butt-run in the yard) she is pretty laid back.

Josie knows how to sit and does so on the first request. She also knows how to give high fives. Josie does well in the car and very well on a leash. She's very quick to catch on and wants nothing more than to please.

We think Josie will make a WONDERFUL family pet - A great dog for any family that has lots of time for playing and cuddling!

FEATURED VOLUNTEER April 2008   Jennifer Kiper

Featured Volunteer

After adopting LuLu, formerly Louisiana, from MPR, Jen Kiper decided to join MPR as a volunteer. In adopting her own dog, she was impressed by the committment and hard work of MPR volunteers. Currently, she assists in transporting fosters to events and helps at local adoption events.

As a third year law student at University of Missouri-Kansas City, she had the opportunity to work with other law students to author and research legislation to prohibit BSL in Missouri cities and towns. As a result of these efforts, Senate Bill 886 has been introduced and is now working its way through the Missouri Senate.

Jen says, "Volunteering with MPR is a wonderful experience. I have learned so much from other volunteers. I look forward to working with MPR to help more dogs and educate more people."

Thank you Jen for the difference you're making in the lives of homeless pit bulls! You rock!!!
