We don't know if Swope escaped a bad home or was simply dumped in the park like so many pit bulls in Kansas City. He was wearing a flea collar that was way too tight for him, almost cutting into his neck. No mater how he managed to find himself alone in the park, we think he left behind a sad life.
Like so many homeless dogs like him, Swope was more than ready to put his past behind and move on to a better life. He is fun-loving boy with an entertaining personality. Very smart too! He loves to learn tricks.
Swope needs to learn about the world and our volunteers and his foster family are providing him with plenty of socialization and fun activities. He's soaking up everything with great pleasure.
Foster Situation: Swope is currently staying in a home with other dogs. He's been introduced to a young female and does very well with her. There is a large fenced yard in the home and he likes spending time outside, exploring the yard. Swope knows how to use the doggy door.
With other dogs: Swope has been introduced to a young and playful female and does great with her. Roughhousing needs to be supervised to make sure it doesn't escalate but we think Swope would do well in a home with a friendly female. Swope shows no aggression towards other dogs through baby gates and crates either. Note that when Swope made his way to a home in Swope Park, he was hanging out with other dogs.
Training: Swope is crate trained and house broken. He seems interested in learning basic commands and tricks.
Personality: Silly, happy goofball! He was a little timid with people when he first arrived to us but has quickly learned that people are actually a lot of fun to play with. It's obvious that he was not used to being treated with kindness but he sure loves every minute of it now.
He needs to learn how to play and to have fun without getting carried away. Our volunteers are teaching him boundaries and providing him with structure and leadership. Now that Swope has figured out that he is allowed to be happy, he usually sports a big ole grin in the face when people are around. He's quite the charmer...
