MERLOT
The name Merlot is thought to derive from the Old French word for young blackbird, merlot, a diminutive of merle, the blackbird (Turdus merula), probably from the color of the grape.
Merlot was rescued from a local shelter when he ran out of time. We met him at the shelter and were very impressed by his friendly disposition and good looks and did everything we could to give him a chance in our program.
The Catahoula bulldog is a crossbred (not a purebred dog); it is a cross between the Catahoula leopard dog and the American bulldog for a specific purpose. The Catahoula bulldog has been around for over 100 years, for the most part in the southern United States.(Al Walker of Animal Research Foundation states: The Catahoula bulldog is recognized as 50% Catahoula leopard and 50% American bulldog in the first generation cross. In succeeding generations it may be 75%-25% mix in either direction. The 75%-25% cross should not be exceeded to maintain the desirable characteristics of each breed.
The Catahoula bulldog makes an excellent companion. They are loyal and devoted to their people. They have become a favorite family pet because of their beautiful coloring. They are loyal, devoted, and while generally laid-back and mellow, this breed is alert to its surroundings and will react if it senses a threat. They love to please their owner(s) and are very patient with children. The Catahoula Bulldog needs firm, patient training from a person who can teach the dog what is expected of him. This breed is highly intelligent and learns quickly. They love to spend time with their family.
Living Situation: Merlot is fostered in a home with two other dogs. He's been introduced to the female and they get along great. Foster mom is working a slow introduction with the resident male.
Merlot is very strong and needs firm leadership. He's a big goofball with no malice. The dog is full or personality and charm and wont miss an occasion to make you laugh. It's very hard to keep a straight face when he's around and he knows it.
Merlot is loving and likes to cuddle and get belly rubs but nothing beats a good ball game. He loves to greet kids he meets going on walks and should do well in a home with children provided he has a good outlet for his energy... Though he is super friendly and doesn't mean any wrong, he could knock over a toddler with his happy enthusiasm so a home with older children is recommended.
Personality: Friendly and outgoing. Loves to roll on his back for a belly rub! He is a high energy, playful dog and very happy-go-lucky. He settles well in the house and likes to just hang out with his loved one.
Best Attribute: His best traits are his playfulness, goofball personality and his love of attention. He wants to be near his person and cuddle on the couch. Merlot's eyes brighten when he makes you life. He's a real comedian. He is very lovable and an absolutely gorgeous color. Merlot will really make someone a wonderful pet!
