Story: We were able to take Dr. Pepper and Mr. Pibb into the program after by contacted by a local animal control (in a town that has a breed ban) that doesn't adopt out pit bulls. Luckily somebody there decided to give these little guys a chance and contacted MPR to see if we had room.
It makes me sad every day while we're playing, and he's being such a good pup, to think that he and so many other dogs might never get that chance because of BSL and/or prejudices.
He was pretty skinny and bony (he's putting on weight now, but still eats as though it's the first and last time he'll see food), had pretty bad kennel cough, and a stomach bug. He was pretty sluggish at first, and needed lots of downtime and rest. Now he's feeling great, full of energy, and loves to play.
Cute Little Guy | Good Sit
Foster Situation: Doc is fostered in a house with three humans and one foster sister, a 3 year old named Bella. Doc loves all of his humans, he's so excited every morning when he wakes up, and every time time he sees my roommates. He gets his tail wagging in super fast-motion, and gets his whole butt wiggling. :) He loves cuddling on the couch with me, and my roommates. He and Bella love to play, in the backyard they love to chase each other, and play with a soccer ball. We do have a big fenced yard that Doc likes to explore. We are working on walking on a leash, he does not pull, but does tend to try to weave in an out of your feet, or "hide" behind you. He is a bit timid in new environments, and seems to need to take his time to meet new people/children. He has seemed very social around new dogs. He is good in the car, but wobbly. So mostly he just sits and waits. Doc sleeps in his crate at the foot of my bed with a big, comfy dog bed in it. I think he'll be a great pup for a loving household that's willing to give him the time and attention that he deserves. He is a pup, so he's not self-sufficient, he does need lots of attention, play-time, cuddle-time, and trips outside. Because he does seem shy in new environments and around new people, he's going to need frequent socialization to help him become more confident.
Update: DP's no longer a bit shy about going on walks at all, he loves going on walks with his foster sister Bella!
Beautiful Colored Coat | Adora-bull | How could you resist that face?
Training: Doc knew how to sit already when I picked him up (he's so smart!), but we use sit for everything. He sits for food, treats, attention, to go in/outside, etc. He picked up on it so fast I don't even have to tell him when to do it, he sits on his own. He's very eager to please. We're working on leash walking, shake/high-five, how to fetch/drop, etc. Doc is still working on his house training. He has only had a couple of accidents inside the house, mostly from getting over-excited. But he knows when and where he is supposed to go. He is very quick to potty and do his business when I take him outside. He is very crate trained, has had no accidents in his crate, loves to play with his bones or kong in there. He's also crated during the day while dad's at work. Doc is a puppy, so of course he's a little mouthy. We're working to correct that, making sure he's knows what's ok to chew on and what's not.
Simply Irresistible | What's Over There? | Hopeful
Personality: Doc is a little bit of everything right now. He is very energetic, silly, he can be rambunctious. He is very courageous and sociable inside the house, and loves meeting new people inside, but seems nervous and more reserved outside. He does need leadership, he needs to know where he fits in the pecking order, because he will test his limits with you, or with canine companions.
Handsome Boy | What Focus! | Too Cute!
Best Attribute : Aside from being gorgeous ( his brindle coat is so unique-looking and soft!), his desire to accompany you, play with you, and his silly, playful spirit will melt your heart. He has this cute thing he does in the yard, he'll be walking around normal, sniffing the ground, and then all of a sudden he freaks out, starts pouncing around on the leaves, runs around, and then jumps in the air while spinning circles! It's priceless!
